Free Talk on Augmentative and Alternative Communications (Oct 17th, UBC)

On October 17th, Dr. Carole Zangari will speak on: “Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in the Preschool Classroom: Infusing Core Language Intervention”

Details and RSVP online

Description: Speech-language pathologists and educators supporting preschoolers with autism and other developmental disabilities often need to infuse AAC interventions into classroom activities and routines. In many therapeutic settings, however, there is not a systematic process for teaching core vocabulary. This presentation describes a curricular approach in which core language is taught using early literacy activities, such as shared reading and writing lessons, typical classroom routines, and play/learning activities.

PEERS event cancelled

ACT is very sorry but we are canceling the PEERS workshop scheduled for November 1 & 2, 2013. Due to circumstances beyond her control, Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson is not able to be in Vancouver to present.

We hope to reschedule Dr. Laugeson in 2014 but in the meantime we will be processing full refunds for all registrants as quickly as possible. Due to staff sickness at ACT and to our current workshop schedule, which has us travelling to Kamloops, Terrace and Chilliwack over the next few weeks, it may take us two weeks to complete this process for all registrants. Please be assured you will receive full refunds as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.

October 3 – Early Bird Deadline for Sibshops and Functional Analysis

Today, Thursday October 3rd is the Early Bird Deadline for two upcoming events:

Functional Analysis and Treatment of Severe Behavior Disorders: Methods for Clinicians & Educators, presented by Dr. Brian Iwata. October 25 & 26, 2013, Vancouver.

Sibshop Training – Building Community Support for Siblings of Children with Special Needs, presented by Don Meyer, Director of the Sibling Support Project. November 15 & 16, 2013, Vancouver.

Children’s Sleep Network – Free Event – Sept. 27 & 28th – Vancouver

Sleep is vital for health but many children with special needs experience chronic sleep problems of great severity. In B.C. it can be very difficult for sleep deprived families to find help to see if there are underlying medical conditions causing their child’s sleep problems.

To raise awareness, the Children’s Sleep Network is planning a two-day free public event on Friday evening & Saturday morning, September 27th & 28th at UBC Robson Square. They are welcoming parents and professionals.

Visit their website for more information and to register, or join their FaceBook page.
