News from the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR 2014)

ACT’s Executive Director, Deborah Pugh, went to IMFAR 2014 in Atlanta in May 2014.

She reports that it was packed with presentations and posters and with 1,800 people attending, it was hard to see everything.

Autism Speaks provides a useful overview on their site, with summaries of talks, video interviews and highlights. You can also browse the IMFAR site for talk descriptions. For the first time ever, there was a large focus on the realities of adults with autism. The results were striking as these are large studies. The situation is likely to be very similar to Canada as these results were based on adults who had health insurance and was based on their medical records.

Free Talk on Augmentative and Alternative Communications (Oct 17th, UBC)

On October 17th, Dr. Carole Zangari will speak on: “Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in the Preschool Classroom: Infusing Core Language Intervention”

Details and RSVP online

Description: Speech-language pathologists and educators supporting preschoolers with autism and other developmental disabilities often need to infuse AAC interventions into classroom activities and routines. In many therapeutic settings, however, there is not a systematic process for teaching core vocabulary. This presentation describes a curricular approach in which core language is taught using early literacy activities, such as shared reading and writing lessons, typical classroom routines, and play/learning activities.
